What is Milk Chocolate?: And Why is it so Delicious!
The creamy, dreamy goodness of milk chocolate is simple to understand: the ingredients, a brief history of the origins of milk chocolate, and why we all love it.
The World’s Most Loved Sweet Treat
To many, milk chocolate is the comfort food to end all comfort foods – it’s the sweet-tooth escape, and a magical treat all rolled into one! But what exactly *is* milk chocolate beyond its melted, smooth, and creamy texture (and sweet flavour) that makes it so appealing? Let’s dive into this popular confection.
The 3 Main Ingredients: Cocoa, Sugar and Milk!!!
At its core, milk chocolate is a mixture of some key element, an easy way to think about the components of it is as a mixture with milk solids being the key addition.
Cocoa Solids
Provides the signature chocolate flavour, and has a generally lower percentage compared to dark chocolate.
Cocoa (Cacao) Butter
Cocoa butter is the fat that is naturally found in a cocoa bean; it contributes towards the melting and creamy qualities of the chocolate.
Sugar
Sugar is an important part of milk chocolate; it provides sweetness and balances some of the bitterness that comes from the chocolate compounds.
Milk Solids
Milk solids are what set milk chocolate apart; milk solids contribute flavour, creaminess, and colour that is lighter than dark chocolate.
Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers help the different ingredients stick together and prevent separation. Example of common emulsifiers include soy lecithin and sunflower lecithin.
Vanilla
Vanilla is used to boost the aromatic complexity and enhance the flavours of the ingredients.
The Short and Sweet History of Creaminess
Cacaos perhaps been enjoyed for thousands of years, but Milk Chocolate is a newer creation. The first solid form of milk chocolate was created in Switzerland, in the late 19th century, by Daniel Peter, when he figured out to combine cocoa liquor with condensed milk, substantially changing the chocolate landscape and allowing chocolate to be more consumable to many others with a palette for chocolate, but leading us to our creamy bar today!
Why Do We Love It?
Milk chocolate’s widespread appeal comes from its unique characteristics:
Sweetness
Generally much sweeter than dark chocolate, appealing to many palates.
Creamy Texture
Milk solids and conching create an incredibly smooth, melt-away quality.
